Exposing digital signage to the elements

Scheveningen is one of the most visited coastal destinations in the Netherlands. Especially in the spring and summer, the beach attracts thousands of visitors every day: tourists, day-trippers, and event attendees.

The municipality and local partners were looking for a digital communication solution that:

  • Fits in with the natural ambiance of the beach and boardwalk
  • Can withstand wind, sand, and salty sea air
  • Enables flexible campaign planning
  • Provides space for both commercial and public communication
  • Aligns with sustainability goals

Traditional metal digital signage did not visually blend in with the surroundings and was less compatible with sustainability goals. The solution had to be visible, robust, and environmentally conscious.

Sustainable solution

Woody is being deployed as a durable outdoor digital signage solution on Scheveningen Beach.

The screens are used for purposes including:

  • Promotions for local restaurants and bars
  • Event announcements
  • Safety and public information
  • Wayfinding and visitor information

Designed for the coast

The structure is made of Accoya wood: sustainable, responsibly sourced, and exceptionally resistant to:

  • High humidity
  • Salty sea air
  • Strong coastal winds
  • Temperature fluctuations

Thanks to its natural appearance, Woody blends seamlessly into the beach landscape, without the harsh, industrial look of traditional steel structures.

A powerful digital communication platform

Behind the sustainable design lies an advanced digital infrastructure.

The system makes it possible to:

  • Manage content remotely
  • Schedule and rotate campaigns
  • Display dynamic messages based on time or events
  • Combine commercial and municipal communications

Results for sustainable digital signage

The installation of Woody on Scheveningen Beach demonstrates that digital infrastructure and the experience of nature can go hand in hand. Woody’s digital displays ensure seamless communication throughout the city.

This project proves that Digital Out-of-Home can also be sustainable and aesthetically sound:

  • Visual integration into the natural environment
  • Sustainable and fully recyclable construction
  • High visibility at a highly frequented prime location
  • Dual function: commercial and public
  • Reliable performance under severe weather conditions
